With the 2025/26 seasons drawing to a close, that inevitably brings about change in personnel within Motherwell’s playing ranks. With countless rumours flying around, we thought it would make sense to discuss who is going where, and whether or not it’d make sense to offer new contracts to players.
Firstly, there’s the loan returnee. Stephen Welsh returns to Celtic after a second successful spell with Motherwell within the same season. They always say to never fall in love with a loan player, but it is incredibly hard to not have enjoyed every contribution the Scot made to the cause this campaign. Welsh leaves having made 27 starts for the Well, 11 clean sheets, a single goal against Rangers (despite VAR’s intervention in the final game), a 90% accurate pass rate, 3.3 average ball recoveries per 90. The list goes on and on. We at the Dispatch sincerely hope it’s not the last we see of the big man, but if it is then we thank him profusely for his efforts.
