Preparing for the Inevitable: Can we find another golden boot winner?

A feeling of inevitability has hit Motherwell fans this summer with rumours of Zimbabwean international, Tawanda Maswanhise leaving the club. His talent, style of play, and most importantly, his goals, have come at a premium this season which has ignited interest throughout Europe. With this reported interest from clubs around Europe building, the club now faces the tough task of preparing for life without Maswanhise, which is by no means an easy task. So, the real question we have to answer: how does Motherwell replace not only the clubs, but the Premiership’s top goalscorer and such a crucial figure in their front-line last season?

Eythor Bjørgolfsson

Looking within the club, there is some candidates who could step up and fulfil the gap left by Maswanhise leaving. To start, the obvious replacement could be 25-year-old Eythor Martin Vigerust Bjørgolfsson who joined in January 2026 under Jens after departing Swedish side Umea FC. The striker showed promising signs before an early finish to his season due to injury. The Norwegian striker showed real promise as he looked determined to get involved in games when he got the chance by looking for the ball whenever he could and driving forward whilst also being physically determined to make an impact in the oppositions box, all of which are encouraging signs for Motherwell fans. All are promising attributes, but of course he won’t be able to replicate or replace some of the attributes obtained by the Zimbabwean such as his electric pace. However, he does have some that the 21-year-old attacker could not offer such as physicality as Bjørgolfsson offers a major presence in offensive positions due to his height and body mass. The Norwegian displayed his athleticism brilliantly early on for Motherwell when he scored his magnificent scissor kick against St Mirren when Motherwell strolled out comfortably with a 5-0 win. Bjørgolfsson is an out and out number 9 and does lack that versatility that Maswanhise had as he could play either side, however, this could benefit Motherwell as there was many moments last season in games where we lacked the presence of a proper number 9 so this role could be filled perfectly by Motherwells number 15, Bjørgolfsson.
