Stamatelopolous Returns From A Land Down Under

Apostolos Stamatelopolous returns to Fir Park, following the conclusion of his loan with Sydney FC.

Apostolos ended last season very much at the forefront of Motherwell fan’s minds, having had an impressive season in a lackluster side. Under Stuart Kettlewell (as Stamatelopolous never featured under Michael Wimmer), he managed 5 goals in 18 appearances, but showed real glimpses of something under the surface. A willing runner, with the ability to poach a goal.

As Askou arrived, and we began to see the style of play and the fruits of the players’ labour beginning to bear fruit, the mind boggled with what we could achieve with a now fully fit Stamatelopolous.

Surprisingly, what followed was much of the same. A willing runner, who perhaps fell unlucky with near misses, striking the post, crossbar and having chances cleared or blocked at the last moment. From August to January, AP managed 27 appearances in all competitions appearances, with 7 goals and 3 assists. And, of those 20 appearances, Stamatelopolous started 15 but only lasted 90 minutes 5 times (one of them being our extra time victory over St Johnstone in the League Cup).

In February, AP returned home to Australia, signing with Sydney FC on loan until the end of the season. Speaking to Australian media, Stamatelopolous said “For me, it was just about playing football again and loving it and there’s no better place to do that
