St Mirren v Motherwell: the one-sided derby and a return to the scene of the crime

Motherwell travel to Paisley in a return to league action after our European double-header against SC Freiburg.

The one-sided derby

Ok, so let’s get this straight. This has bizarrely become a one-sided derby in a lot of aspects. Motherwell fans aren’t bothered at all about our Paisley neighbours. Yet somehow, everything we do — or don’t do — comes back as ammunition for the Pandas.

The cup semi-final where The Mighty were resoundingly beaten by the Saints was overtly rubbed in the Well faces due to how well we had been performing before that fateful day. The dive and subsequent punishment of Calum Slattery last season — despite being 3-0 up and battering them 5-0 at full-time — is contentious, and further ammunition for the team in black and white.

St Mirren signing an array of ex-Well “stars”, alongside having had an ex-Well gaffer and still having an ex-Well assistant, ex-Well youth coach and ex-Well legend in the building, is also a bit of a stickler. Add this all together and this one-sided derby has a bit of flavour now. And you know what, maybe it isn’t as one-sided as us Well fans kid ourselves on it is. Boy, I love beating them.

Europe ends, and the league returns Motherwell travel to face St Mirren on Sunday after the European double-header against SC Freiburg. The Well ran the German giants close in the first leg but eventually succumbed to a 3-1 loss, before a 4-1 defeat in Germany
