Motherwell 0 – 0 Falkirk: one shot on target, and the demon remains
Motherwell 0-0 Falkirk, Fir Park, Sunday 9 August 2026.

Four days before the return leg with HJK, Motherwell took 55% of the ball, put seven shots into the Falkirk box, generated 1.43 xG — and made Scott Bain work exactly once.

It finished goalless in front of 7,028 at Fir Park, John McGlynn left with another point that he did not have to earn, and the demon we talked about all week is still very much in residence. Motherwell have now not beaten Falkirk since 2009…

Still, the result doesn’t feel too grim – it’s another result Motherwell have left unscathed in a particularly difficult run of domestic and European fixtures. If anything, it’s impressive for a team that’s still in transition – hell, it’d be impressive regardless.

But there was a bit of disappointment, as many walked from Fir Park thinking that with sharper finishing, they’d have been walking away with three points.

Match report

For 45 minutes this was exactly the game we wanted. Motherwell had the ball, Falkirk did not want it, and the chances came. The first-half xG reads 0.91 to 0.04. That is a siege – not a tight result, not a nilliest nil to ever
