About The Steelmen Dispatch

The Steelmen Dispatch is an independent publication covering Motherwell FC. We are not a fan forum or a news aggregator. We are a journalism operation — one that believes Motherwell deserves the same quality of editorial attention that clubs with ten times the resources receive as a matter of course.

Why we exist

Scottish football is covered unevenly. The Old Firm generate most of the column inches. Clubs outside that duopoly — clubs doing genuinely interesting, occasionally remarkable things — receive a fraction of the attention their performances merit.

Motherwell are, by any honest measure, one of the most interesting clubs in Britain. Fan-owned since 2016, the club has operated with a coherence of identity that most professional football organisations never achieve. The 2025–26 season — a Conference League qualification, a record clean-sheet haul, a points total that sits fourth in the club’s entire history — is the clearest evidence yet that the model works.

The Dispatch exists to document that properly. Match by match. Season by season. In full.

What we cover

Match reports — written after every Premiership fixture, with an emphasis on how and why, not just what happened.

Analysis — longer tactical and statistical pieces, built around data where it illuminates rather than obscures.

Interviews — with players, staff, and the people around the club. We ask the questions the press conference format doesn’t allow.

History — 140 years of Motherwell FC, told chronologically and in depth.

Statistics — a growing archive of performance data, from season summaries to individual player profiles.

Community — a space for members to discuss the articles, the season, and the club.

Editorial principles

We do not publish rumour as news. We do not repackage press releases. We do not write to generate clicks.

Every piece is written from the position that the reader is intelligent, that football is worth thinking about carefully, and that independent scrutiny — even of a club you love — is a form of respect.

We are supporters of Motherwell FC in the broad sense: we want the club to do well, to be well-run, and to be understood. We are not cheerleaders. We will say when we think something has gone wrong, because we think the club is better served by honest coverage than by uncritical support.

Funding

The Steelmen Dispatch is funded entirely by reader subscriptions. We carry no advertising. We have no commercial relationships with the club or its partners. We are answerable only to our readers.

This matters. It means our coverage is not shaped by access concerns or commercial pressures. It means we can publish the piece that needs to be published, not the piece that is easiest to publish.

Subscriptions start at £3 a month. Every subscription directly funds the work — and a portion of reader contributions each season is donated to the Well Society, Motherwell FC’s supporter ownership body.
